IOU's Artistic Director David Wheeler spent three months in Antarctica working alongside scientists and support teams as part of British Antarctic Survey and Arts Council England Artists and Writers programme. Two exhibitions resulting from this time, Half Moon and Antarctic Travelogue, are available to view at IOU Studio: A special talk by Dr John Shears on Protecting Antarctica will be given at IOU's Studio Dean Clough on Tuesday 13 March 2012. John Shears is Board Member for Operations and Engineering at the British Antarctic Survey and currently manages all the research stations, ships and aircraft operations in the polar regions. David Wheeler will join Dr John Shears to talk about his own experience as Artist in Residence in Antarctica. Entry for this event is free but capacity is limited (advance booking recommended). Artworks from these exhibitions are included in Landscapes of Exploration – an exhibition of work by artists who have taken part in the Artist and Writers Programme, and which commemorates the centenary of Scotts final expedition.
