Vortex

f

The catalyst for Vortex is the unique and surprisingly beautiful sound produced by a vortex cannon, created by physicist, inventor and BBC science presenter Jem Stansfield.  The four metre long steel vortex cannon when fired vertically produces a vortex ring which shoots thousands of feet into the sky at very high speed - tracing a path to the edge of our breathable atmosphere.

In collaboration with composer Yannis Kyriakides, contemporary music ensemble musikFabrik, Jem Stansfield and the University of Huddersfield, IOU is creating Vortex - a music and sound project which continues the theme of natural forces and phenomena developed from IOU's Artistic Director David Wheeler's time in Antarctica.

Yannis Kyriakides will create three distinct musical elements:  a composed piece for musikFabrik to present in concert halls,  a soundscape for a sound installation and a structured improvisation piece to be performed within the soundscape installation - mixing with sound producing sculptures and live firings of the vortex cannon. The first presentations of  Vortex are planned for Autumn 2012

Small World

Small World looks at the machinery of the Universe through the eyes of a person the size of a candle flame. A tiny explorer will set out on a solitary 1000 mile walk, bringing together people from around the world in a real and simulated adventure in mind and body.

The journey is an exploration of our perceptions of the physical nature of the world, using the idea of epic expeditions of endurance and scientific research. Employing concepts of scale, distance and time, Small World aims to reveal a little of the apparatus of the natural world in a comprehensible and thought provoking way.

Small World has a number of parts: a live expedition in miniature, a linked gallery exhibition and an interactive website. Importantly, there will be a number of international projects working with schools, universities and scientific establishments to devise significant Waypoint markers to be revealed along the journey. Also there will be international projects to recruit and prepare ‘Walkers’ for the expedition.

IOU is currently working with a range of partners both in the UK and China to present Small World in 2012. If you would like to get involved, please contact Executive Producer Richard Sobey by clicking here. here
